When a unit is superseded

The transition is a project, not an update.

Units are revised and superseded, and a resource built against the old version continues to exist and to be used. Transition periods apply and providers routinely discover mid-period that their materials do not address the new requirements.

The work is rarely a light edit. Changes to performance evidence and assessment conditions frequently require the assessment to be redesigned rather than amended, and content changes follow from that.

The practical approach is to map old to new first, identifying what genuinely changed rather than assuming the whole thing did. Frequently a substantial proportion carries over and the work concentrates in two or three areas.

Learners partway through need a decision: complete on the old version within the transition, or transfer. That is an administrative and sometimes a fee question as well as an academic one, and it should be settled before the deadline approaches.

Superseded materials should be marked and retained rather than deleted, since assessment conducted under the old version has to be defensible against the version that applied at the time.

The other transition trap is the qualification packaging rules rather than the units. A revised qualification can change electives, prerequisites or core, and a provider that maps unit to unit and ignores packaging can transition every unit correctly and still be delivering a combination the new qualification does not permit.
